Given the amount of time that the average person spends shaving, waxing, plucking, trimming, or bleaching, it’s not surprising that laser hair removal is one of the most requested aesthetic treatments. This safe, effective, long-term solution is designed to get rid of unwanted facial or body hair for good. The providers at Easton Dermatology Associates provide laser hair removal services to patients on the Delmarva Peninsula.

Laser Hair Removal Q & A

What is laser hair removal?

Non-invasive, effective, and virtually painless, laser hair removal is one of the most commonly-performed cosmetic procedures in the United States. The cutting-edge technology works by sending short-pulse durations of laser-generated heat through your skin and directly into active-growth hair follicles. Once there, the laser light is absorbed by the pigments in the follicle, which effectively renders it inactive so it can no longer produce hair.

The team at Easton Dermatology Associates use the Icon™ Aesthetic System by CynoSure®, which is the latest generation of advanced IPL technology.

What are the benefits of laser hair removal?

Although most people choose to undergo laser hair removal treatments because they don’t want to devote another minute to tweezing, waxing, or shaving, the procedure comes with a couple of additional benefits: It may leave your skin looking noticeably smoother and silkier, and it may also give you a more uniform complexion at the treatment site. The Icon laser has the only FDA-approved Skintel® Melanin Reader™, which helps ensure a safe and effective setting for any skin type.

Laser hair removal can be used on virtually any part of your body, and it’s just as effective for small areas as it is for larger areas. Most patients use the technology to get rid of hair from the upper lip, chin, face, neck, bikini area, legs, chest, back, and shoulders.

What is the procedure like?

Before getting started, the treatment area is cleansed, dried, and marked with a light-colored cosmetic pencil to help guide the laser and ensure proper coverage. You’ll also wear eye shields to protect your retinas and corneas from the laser.

During the procedure, your doctor will gently hold your skin taut and systematically pass the laser device over the entire treatment area, spot-by-spot, so the laser can deliver quick pulses of light into each active hair follicle. Laser hair removal is a quick and relatively painless procedure that’s been described as feeling somewhat like a tiny rubber band snapping against your skin. The entire procedure can last anywhere from a few minutes to more than an hour, depending on the size of the treatment area.

When will I see results?

You can expect to see a 10-25% reduction in hair after your first laser hair treatment, but because hair grows in cycles and the laser only targets active-growth follicles, you’ll need multiple treatments to achieve complete results. Most patients require about five to seven laser hair removal treatments, each spaced four to six weeks apart, to achieve permanent hair removal.
